My laminate instructions state that it cannot be layed on top of carpet. Most laminate flooring underlayment is 1mm to 3mm thick. Add glue to the edge and lay it in. If you reuse your thick carpet padding your floor will be too bouncy and it may damage the locking system.

Can i go ahead and lay the laminate straight on the carpet. First of all if you install carpet over laminate flooring you can always go back to laminate flooring by removing the carpet. I have a thin carpet on top of a chipboard floor that looks to me like it will to the same job as the polystyrene type roll i ve previously used as underlay.
