If you have a higher profile carpet that is plush and padded like we do you need to lay a solid surface down to make it firm. If you are using more than one sheet of plywood tape the sheets together at the seam. This is also wrong. Most installers and builders recommend not installing laminate flooring over carpet as there are too many variables that can create a mess.

When placing plywood sheets over plush carpet lay them in the opposite direction the floor will go. Most laminate flooring underlayment is 1mm to 3mm thick.

One of the evolutions of the do it yourself industry has been the creation of easy to use and easy to install products such as vinyl plank flooring. We learned this the hard way. Installing laminate flooring over carpet is not recommended in most installation situations. Since carpet is usually plush and soft your laminate flooring would not have the support it needs to keep the locking system sturdy.

You can install laminate flooring over carpet though generally not recommended. Most carpet underlayments range from 8mm thick to 10mm thick way too thick for laminate flooring installations. Now you may think that added cushion equals a softer floor. Plywood is highly recommended when installing over high pile carpet.
